The Locked Room

Letters from the Past

When my grandmother passed away, she left behind not just her home but a mystery that would force me to confront my estranged sister, Clara. The will was clear: I inherited the house and all its contents, except for a small bedroom at the end of the upstairs hall. That room, along with its secrets, belonged solely to Clara. It was a stipulation that felt like a cruel twist of fate, especially since Clara and I hadn’t spoken in six long years. Our last conversation had been at our mother’s funeral, where a single, careless remark had severed our bond, leaving us as mere shadows of the sisters we once were.

As the days passed, I tried to convince myself that I didn’t care about the locked room. I told myself that whatever lay behind that door was irrelevant to me. But deep down, I knew that wasn’t true. The anticipation gnawed at me, especially as the date approached for Clara’s arrival. The lawyer had insisted that we both be present to settle the estate, and that meant facing the very person I had avoided for so long.

Finally, the day came when Clara’s car pulled into the gravel driveway. My heart raced as I watched her step out, holding a shoebox that sent a wave of nostalgia crashing over me. It was the same box our grandmother had kept on the top shelf, a treasure trove of memories we were never allowed to touch. Clara looked different—older, softer, yet still unmistakably my sister.

“Grandma wrote us letters,” she said, her voice trembling slightly. “One a year. For six years.”

The words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotions. I felt my knees weaken as the reality of her statement sank in. The lawyer cleared his throat, breaking the tension. He held out an envelope, the key to the locked room inside. Whatever our grandmother had prepared for us, whatever secrets she had kept, was waiting behind that door. But neither Clara nor I had the courage to take the next step. We stood there, two sisters on the precipice of a past we had both tried to forget, staring at the door that held our grandmother’s final gift.

What lay behind it? And could we face it together?
