I Almost Reported My Neighbor — Episode 1: The Padlocked Shed

I want to be honest about the kind of person I was six months ago: the kind who kept a mental file on her neighbors. And the file on the man who moved into 14 Alder Court was thick.

His name was Denny. His lawn was a disaster. His three kids came and went in clothes that never matched, sometimes too big, sometimes too small, and never twice the same faces — I was almost sure the little girl from July was not the little girl from September. There were cars in his driveway at two in the morning. There was a padlocked shed out back that hummed with some machine I couldn’t place. And there was the night his oldest boy knocked on my door asking, very politely, if we had any spare insulin needles, which of course we did not.

I had the county’s number written on a sticky note by my phone. I had rehearsed what I would say. I’d like to report a welfare concern. I told myself it was for the children. I mostly believed it.

The night before I meant to call, I couldn’t sleep, and from my dark kitchen I watched Denny’s back door open. He came out fast, carrying something — someone — small and utterly limp, a child’s arm swinging loose, and he half-ran to his car and laid the little body across the back seat.

My hand was on the phone. My heart was slamming. Everything I’d suspected seemed to be happening right in front of me, and I finally understood that whatever I did in the next ten seconds, I would have to live with.

I pulled on my coat and ran across the wet grass instead.
