Careen didn’t cry, and she didn’t gloat. She just talked, in the flat voice of someone who has already survived the worst part, while I sat on my bathroom floor in the dress I would not be wearing.

She had married Adam four years ago. He had never divorced her — he’d simply left, changed cities, changed jobs, and started again with someone who didn’t know. There had been a woman before me, too, she thought. He was good at beginnings. He was good at the version of himself that only lasted until the paperwork got real.

“I’m not calling to save you,” she said. “I stopped trying to save people. I’m calling because I’m tired, and you’re the first one who ever picked up the phone.”

We talked until the sky went grey. And somewhere in those hours, the two of us — the wife he never ended and the bride he never meant to keep — stopped being rivals and became something closer to witnesses.

At ten the next morning, in a room full of white flowers and my mother’s happy tears, Careen walked in through the double doors at the back just as the music started. She didn’t make a scene. She simply walked up the aisle and stood beside me, and together we watched the color leave Adam’s face.

I did not marry him that day. I walked out of that room lighter than I had walked into it, into a life that was smaller and truer and entirely mine.

Careen and I still talk. She was the maid of honor at a wedding I did have, two years later, to a man who has never once made me want to open his mail. When people ask how we met, we tell them the truth: we were introduced, at midnight, by the one lie that finally ran out of room.
